Station 4: Escalation of Violence

«How did it come to this?» Domestic violence develops gradually. In most cases, it starts with emotional abuse.

Bild Legende:

Emotional abuse leads to dependency, low self-esteem, fear, isolation, feelings of guilt and shame, hopelessness, and often causes health problems. Emotional abuse is often underestimated, but many victims suffer the consequences of this form of violence for years after separating from their abuser.

Over time, the relationship can also become a place where physical and sexualized violence becomes normalized. Many victims blame themselves. This is often because perpetrators tend to hold victims responsible for the violence, even making them feel as though they deserved it.

Violence is never okay.

Victims are never to blame.

Violence doesn't just «happen». Violence is a choice.

This remains true even when great remorse is shown after an incident.
