When things move very quickly at the start of a relationship, it can be a sign of « love bombing ». Showering someone with attention, promises, gifts, and compliments is a tactic to rapidly create a deep connection and foster emotional dependency.
«Love bombing» is a form of manipulation. The more emotionally dependent someone becomes, the easier it is to later exploit their trust and control their behavior. This often involves a cycle of intense affection followed by emotional withdrawal, which feels like an emotional rollercoaster for the affected person. «Love bombing» is also used to quickly win someone back after an argument, a boundary violation, or an incident of violence.
