For many people, their own home is not a safe place.

Domestic violence is a reality in Switzerland and is widespread. It refers to violence within marriage, partnerships, or family settings. The majority of cases occur within marriages or partnerships – even when the couple lives apart.

The primary victims are women, but men and children are also affected.

This violence often takes place in secret, behind closed doors. Yet it is not an isolated issue. Domestic violence affects all of us – whether in our own relationships or as friends, parents, neighbors.

In 2023, Swiss police recorded nearly 20'000 cases of domestic violence. However, many victims do not report it due to fear or shame. Every two weeks, a woman is killed by her partner, ex-partner, or a family member.

How can this happen?

The tour «Paths into and out of violent relationships» features ten stations that explore how violence arises in relationships and what actions can be taken. It is part of the Bernese awareness project «Tür an Tür – Together Against Domestic Violence in the Neighborhood» and the project #withyou by Tech Against Violence as part of the 2024 prevention campaign «16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.»
